A bit about me...

I've been out there and know what a difference this charity makes to the people so I'm very happy to contribute what I can over the next couple of months. In particular, raising the charity's profile through filmmaking and helping to organise next years Landirani Live Festival.

Hello.

Since starting my placement I have been getting stuck into all sorts which has been good fun. One thing that has really kept me busy over the last few weeks is the search for film funding, it’s a bit of a nightmare! I am beginning to run out of ideas, however I am persisting and will hopefully come up with the goods…

Another big project is organizing this year’s festival which is a good laugh but again lots of work. I have started to get hold of a few artists but still there are a heap more to get, as well as all the other less exiting aspects such as festival lighting, generator power, security, etc! But it’s really fun and will no doubt be hugely rewarding on the day of the festival to see that the hard work has paid off. We also now have a PR company on board who seem really keen on helping us to find local business sponsers for various festival expenditures which is great as the costs seem to be rising by the day, so their help is much appreciated!

So for now we’ll just carry on and see how much can be achieved in the time that we have :)

Post | Hello.

Hello.

The charity I am helping is The Landirani Trust; a small, non-profit charity which helps an impoverished community in Malawi to become self-sufficient. Predominantly we focus on helping young orphans who have no-one to care for them, let alone afford school uniforms and a decent bite to eat…so this is part and parcel of what we are trying to re-build. Similarly we try to benefit the community through feeding programs, providing improved water sanitation through safe water pumps, and most importantly…educating. Together with education, and providing the building blocks to a better future, this community can hopefully become both self-sufficient and sustainable.

The charity was started by my Mum, who spent her first years growing up in Malawi, and since going back to visit for the first time in April 2005, decided straight away to set the charity up in a bid to alleviate the suffering that has sadly become a part of every day life.  I spent a few months teaching and helping in what ways I could in 2006, and I have been over on average once a year since then. I graduated last year with a degree in Film Studies and have since been looking to get into documentary film making, whenever I have gone out I have done bits of filming which is a fantastic way of pushing the awareness of the charity further, however the airfare is not cheap and so one of my first jobs is to see if I can find funding to get out there! As well as funding for a filming trip, I will be helping to set up the Landirani Live festival, which will be it’s second year running…and is due to be bigger and better! The festival is a great opportunity to get Landirani’s message across, as well as have a great time. There will be Live bands including an array of African musicians, an ‘Audio/Visual Tent’ with DJs and film screenings, Art sculpturing, Kid’s activities, food, a bar, and lots more! So if any of you guys are free next September 4th come along for the party and raise some money for a worthy cause along the way :)

Anyway there is plenty of work to be done, and when I get the chance I shall try to update when I can on here…

Peace and Love

Sam.
