Location: Hove | Charity Refugee Youth Project

I'll be working with young refugees in London to help Refugee Youth Project better target their services. That means finding out what the kids feel they need, not just what we think is best for them.

Post | week two – going too fast!

It’s been hectic since writing last week!

Working on two projects across London, simultaneously, is an interesting game hinged on being very, very organised – something which I am not!  However, there have miraculously been no hitches and all is going really well, despite the chaos.

Highlights have been meeting with the young people, meeting with professionals working in other organisations, creating partnerships, planning training days for the beneficiaries and slowly but surely finding my feet.  There is no doubt that there is a mountain of paperwork which accompanies almost every decision, but in and of itself, even this is something to learn from.

Tomorrow I will be meeting with a youth club, spreading the word about the activities to be held in mid-April for one of the projects.  Friday will be a similar vein, going to a partner organisation and meeting with some of their beneficiaries in order to try and get them involved in the workshops.

Interviews started today too – one of the main parts of my role as research and evaluation officer for Refugee Youth Project.  I had a really positive talk with the deputy head of the school where RYP runs one of their projects and it provided me with a great deal of important information for the final report, which I will write sometime in May.  Also, apart from one, all of the young people I met today demonstrated a keen interest in being interviewed about their lives in London, and in being trained to interview one another.  So I am excited for the next few weeks to see how it all comes together.

Anyway, that’s it for now!  More in about a week – the next time I have time to stop and think!

Post | Day two..

Day two with Refugee Youth Project and it’s all go!

Lots of admin to get sorted out for the whirlwind that will be the coming two months.  Today and yesterday has been all about setting aims and objectives, drafting necessary documents, planning and coordinating schedules, and meeting with others who are keen to help out.

We have plans for photography workshops, theatre outings, graffiti art collaborations and all sorts of other exciting participatory activities both in Barnet and Croydon.  Lots to do, lots to do!  It’s all very exciting.

I still can’t quite believe that I am working for Refugee Youth Project – it’s amazing.

More later….
